Israeli President makes Oxford visit

by Laura Pitel | 09:38 GMT, Tue 18 November 2008

Shimon Peres, President of Israel, comes to Oxford today as part of a three-day visit to Britain.

He has been invited by Balliol College to give a lecture at the Sheldonian, where he will speak tonight on "the globalisation of peace."

The 85 year-old President was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 along with Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin in recognition of his contribution to the Oslo Accords.

But his visit has been met with opposition from student Palestinian groups, who have accused Balliol of having "decided to reward the oppressor" rather than "supporting the occupied." Protests are planned for the Sheldonian tonight.

I just want to thank all the heroes at the conference which participated in protesting opression and genocides in the first degree!!! They truly revived the pulse of hope in a place where hope seemed nothing more than imagination. Thank YOU ALL from me and every person in the middle east :)

It is an outrageous event: The University of Oxford recognizes the brutal Israeli oppression in all occupied territories since 1967 against all international law.
