What is RSS?
RSS is a flexible way of delivering regularly changing web content. Using an RSS reader, you can read any feeds you've subscribed to in one place.
Why bother?
Having your feeds in one place saves you time: instead of repeatedly visiting websites to check for updates, you are informed when new articles are posted. You only have to subscribe to sections that interest you, such as news and music. RSS also preserves your privacy as you're not giving away your email address for a mailing list.
How do I use it?
To receive headlines, you need an RSS reader. These can be browser-based or desktop-based.
Browser based
The advantage of browser-based readers are that you can access them from any computer using a web browser like Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, just as you would Facebook. Google Reader is an example. You must copy and paste the address of the RSS feed(s) you are interested in into the subscription box. Then, whenever you log in to your reader, the latest headlines will be displayed.
Desktop based
You can also install an application to your computer that will read feeds for you and alert you whenever they are updated, much like an email client like Outlook Express. On Apple OS X Leopard, Apple Mail can do this. On Windows, there are many programs including NewzCrawler.
